Call for four PhD Research Positions
Modelling and analysis of superconductors for DC power transmission
(Full time, salary in accordance with CUMT regulations for qualification)
China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) is one of the top national comprehensive universities in China. The Institute of Sustainable Energy (ISE) of CUMT is a newly established centre of excellence for high-level multidisciplinary comprehensive and advanced scientific research in the areas of sustainable energy towards creation of the next generation energy system. The ISE under leadership of the 1984 Nobel Laureate of Physics, Professor Carlo Rubbia and the Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK), Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor C. C. Chan, is currently focusing on the following three research fields:
• Zero Emission Energy Systems
• Innovative Energy Storage Systems
• Long Distance G-Watt Electric Power Transmission
The research fieldLong Distance G-Watt Electric Power Transmission aims atdeveloping at ISE the innovative approach to sustainabletransmission of high electric power over the long distances up to 5000 km with a novel type of superconductivity (MgB2) as an alternative to the present implementation of the Ultra High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) areal lines. Magnesium di-boride (MgB2) is a simple metallic compound produced from cheap and abundant materials. The cryogenic operation is possible at temperatures of pressured helium gas or liquid hydrogen. The approach has been proposed by Carlo Rubbia in 2011 and the world’s first MgB2 power cable carried of the 20 kA DC current has been developed and successfully tested at CERN in 2014. The purpose of the present program is to provide a new option for high-capacity electric power transmission over long distances with not only excellent electrical performance but also with the economic and environmental benefits. The objective is to design and test a prototype of the superconducting MgB2transmission line that is scalable to long distances. The R&D activities are focused on developing of a low-loss cryogenic system for long-distance cooling as well as on the electrical characterization and integration of a superconducting transmission link. They are closely linked to electromagnetic and thermodynamic modellingand simulations conducted in parallel with the economic analysis and monitoring of transmission system technologies, grid expansion process and installation of new transmission capacities.
For modelling and analysis of superconductors, ISE invites the applications for fourPhD research positions in accordance with the following tasks:
1) Thermal modelling and optimization of cryogenic system (A-1/2016)
2) Electromagnetic modelling and optimization of superconductor at nominal and transient conditions (A-2/2016)
3) Economic analysis of superconducting transmission system (A-3/2016)
4) Expert reviewing of transmission system technologies and grid expansion process (A-4/2016)
Requirements:
• PhD in physics/electrical engineering/economics or similar qualification
• Profound knowledge of electro-magnetic and thermal processes in superconductors
• Profound knowledge of heat and mass transfer
• Experience with CFD simulations
• Experience with simulation of electro-magnetic and thermal behavior of superconductors
• Knowledge of thermal and mechanical properties of materials at low temperatures
• Experience with FEM methods and FEA analysis, knowledge with COMSOL, ANSYS
• Knowledge of existing transmission system technologies (AC and DC transmission, LCC and VSC converters, multi-terminal operation and interconnections)
• Excellent English and Chinese skills (oral, written)
• Strong teamwork and communication skills to work in a multidisciplinary environment
The applications from candidates with international backgrounds are particularly encouraged. The ISE offers an internationally competitive salary in line with candidate’s qualification, excellent working conditions and vibrant research environment.
